Stalhrim is one of the most powerful materials featured in Skyrim's Dragonborn expansion, allowing players to craft exceptional weapons and armor with unique frost enchantment bonuses. Unlocking the ability to forge this enchanted ice requires completing a specific side quest known as A New Source of Stalhrim. Understanding the necessary prerequisites and exact steps will help players access this valuable crafting skill without unnecessary delay.

Prerequisites to Access the Quest

Before you can begin searching for the missing Skaal blacksmith, you must complete specific narrative milestones on Solstheim. The main requirement is progressing through the primary Dragonborn storyline until you finish the quest titled The Fate of the Skaal. Completing this objective cleanses the Wind Stone and frees the village residents from Miraak's spell.

In addition to main story progress, players must ensure their character has reached a sufficient level to handle the dangerous encounters involved. While the quest itself does not carry a hard level restriction, traveling across the frozen northern wastes of Solstheim presents significant combat challenges. Having reliable equipment and healing supplies prepared in advance will make the journey much smoother.

How to Trigger A New Source of Stalhrim

Once you have freed Skaal Village, travel away from the settlement and wait for at least two in-game days before returning. Upon your return, you should notice that Deor Woodcutter and Fanari Strong-Voice are engaged in a tense conversation near the village center. Listening to their dialogue reveals that Baldor Iron-Shaper, the local blacksmith, has suddenly disappeared under suspicious circumstances.

Speaking directly to Deor after their conversation ends will officially add A New Source of Stalhrim to your active journal. He explains that he saw a group of Thalmor soldiers carrying something heavy away toward the northern coast. Following this lead sends you on a rescue mission to locate the captive blacksmith.

Rescuing Baldor Iron-Shaper

Your search leads to an abandoned structure known as the Abandoned Lodge, situated in the northeastern region of Solstheim. Outside the building, you will encounter aggressive Thalmor soldiers guarding the perimeter who must be defeated before entering. Searching the leader of these guards yields the key needed to unlock the lodge basement.

Inside the basement, you will find Baldor held captive alongside a Thalmor interrogation squad. Eliminate the remaining guards and free Baldor, who informs you that the Thalmor stole a map showing the locations of ancient Stalhrim deposits. He requests that you retrieve the map from the Thalmor leader at Northshore Landing before returning to Skaal Village.

Retrieving the Map and Learning Stalhrim Crafting

Travel west toward Northshore Landing to locate the Thalmor expedition team docked near the coast. You can choose to fight your way through the armed guards or use stealth tactics to retrieve the map from the primary officer. Once the map is safely in your possession, return to Skaal Village and hand it over to Baldor.

Handing the map back to Baldor completes the quest and rewards you with his gratitude. As a practical reward, he teaches you the secret techniques needed to craft and temper Stalhrim gear at any forge. You will also gain access to the Stalhrim Source, a ancient burial site containing multiple harvestable deposits of this rare material.
